Wrap a Christmas parcel for a sailor

Seafarers in Leith or other Scottish ports over Christmas are far from home and family and a Christmas parcel and friendly greeting may be a lifeline. This year Leith Churches Together is organising the parcels with the joint support of the Sailors’ Society, the Mission to Seafarers and the Apostleship of the Sea, and we’ll have a very special Christmas card to enclose, designed by a pupil from St Mary’s (Leith) RC Primary School.  Ocean Terminal are kindly hosting the event in their mall for the first two days, and St Mary’s Star of the Sea in their Parish Centre on the third.  To see a poster, click on the link.  Seafarers Parcels Poster.

Everyone is welcome to drop by, but if you can offer an hour to help on the main team, please contact Jennifer Stark 0131 554 2578, email outreach@leithchurchestogether.org.uk

Pause For Peace @ Ocean Terminal, Sunday 11th September 2011

Our short act of remembrance in Ocean Terminal was attended by 40-50 people, and included a minute’s silence in the whole mall.  We remembered all victims of terrorism and those working for peace.  Several people told us afterwards that they had found it both moving and appropriate.  Many thanks to the Ocean Terminal management and staff for their help in arranging this.  For the order of service, click on the link.  PAUSE FOR PEACE.

2011 Annual General Meeting

Leith Churches Together held their Annual General Meeting on 8th March at the Leith Acorn Centre YMCA.  Guest speakers Helen Hood and Rev Mitchell Bunting shared some of their experiences from the Edinburgh 2010  Conference, which celebrated the centenary of the Edinburgh 1910 World Missionary Conference.  They left us with some material inspiration in the shape of an ‘Edinburgh 2010′ umbrella, and stones from Iona, brought to Edinburgh for the conference.  Many thanks to both for a great evening, and to the ‘Acorn’ for hosting us.

Ocean Terminal Christmas Prayer Tree

Ocean Terminal Christmas Prayer Tree – a total of 120 messages (prayers or remembrance messages for others) were hung on our Christmas Prayer Tree in Ocean Terminal during the 9 days before Christmas.  The prayers were collected, and offered in the Leith churches over the Christmas period.  The tree clearly touched some emotions in the shoppers and staff there.  One person wrote a message for us, ‘Thank you all for this special tree.  Feel much happier as a result’.   More details and some photos on the Ocean Terminal page of this website.

A new star has risen…. Our Christmas card this year was a picture  (‘Christmas Star Over the Earth’) by a 10-year old girl who submitted it for the Christmas card competition organised by the Episcopal Diocese of Edinburgh.  Many thanks to Alex for allowing us to use her work.  The card was distributed to staff and visitors in Ocean Terminal, and also to seafarers whose ships were in Leith at Christmas.  Click on the links below to see the card.
